Writing for The Times, Tony Cascarino has insisted Manchester United are “absolutely right” in allowing Alexis Sanchez to leave on loan this summer.
What did he say?
The Chile international will spend this season on loan with Inter, with United still expected to cover a large portion of the star’s mammoth wages.
However, Cascarino is adamant the Red Devils have made the right call on the 30-year-old, and revealed he could understand why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted him out of Old Trafford.

He said: “Manchester United are absolutely right to get rid of Alexis Sánchez. I don’t think Sánchez has been a serious professional for a few years now. His attitude in his final year at Arsenal was poor and since joining United he hasn’t seemed interested. He’s lost his hunger, his sharpness and his desire.
“How many times have we watched him play for United and expected him to deliver? Both in big games, when a player should be hungry to prove himself, and then in cup games against weaker opposition, we have watched, waited and been disappointed.
“Sánchez has been a symbol of United’s struggles and of their careless approach to recruitment, and so, given the absence of any kind of form, I can understand why the United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted him out of Old Trafford.”
Ruthless
To let a player of Sanchez’s reputation go when the numbers up front are already startlingly thin proves Solskjaer has some serious guts. The United boss appears to be intent on blooding the club’s talented youngsters into the first-team, and someone like Mason Greenwood will be a prime figure to feature more prominently this season thanks to the Chilean’s departure.
Getting rid of Sanchez – even if it only is on a loan deal – represents a huge statement that United will refuse to carry any passengers under Solskjaer. Perform or leave. Whilst it’s a move that could potentially back-fire given the Red Devils’ lack of depth, it’s a promising sign the club are embracing the need to make tough decisions.
