CricInfo25-Apr-2001The Chief Executive of the ICC, David Richards, has requested clarificationfrom the Sri Lankan board as to the current status of Thilanga Sumathipalaaccording to a report in the Daily Mirror newspaper today. The Sri Lankan board had previously informed the ICC that the Chairman ofthe Interim Committee, Vijaya Malalsekera, would be its representative atthe ICC’s Annual General Meeting, which is to be held in London in June.Richards, however, states in his letter: “While your fax states that MrMalalsekera will attend the Executive Board meeting in June, it does nottell me whether Thilanga Sumathipala continues to hold the office ofDirector representing your Board until the meeting. If it is your attentionthat Mr Malalsekera’s appointment is to take immediate effect, you need tosay so explicitly. In doing so, you should make it clear that Mr Sumathipala’s appointment has been revoked by your board.”His letter also appears to question the legality of Sumathipala’s dismissal:”As I understand corporate law, a person once nominated as a directorremains in that position until he either resigns or is formally replaced bythe organisation which appointed him.”
