da heads bet:
da bet vitoria: With Wayne Rooney, Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe seemingly certainties to be on the plane to South Africa this summer, there is another striker that Capello should call up to the World Cup squad, Sunderland’s Darren Bent.
Bent has been in great form for Sunderland this season scoring 24 goals and finishing 3rd in the top scorers chart behind Didier Drogba and Wayne Rooney. Surely as the second highest scoring Englishman in the Premiership he has to go to the World Cup? However Bent has been in this situation before, in the 2005/06 season he also finished the 3rd highest scorer with 18 goals in his first season at Charlton, but still didn’t get selected for the World Cup and ridiculously Theo Walcott, having never played a Premier League game went instead.
Although Darren Bent may not possess the sheer ability of Rooney or the presence and link-up play of Crouch, the one thing that Bent does have more than any other England striker is the ability to be an out-and-out goal scorer. Unfortunately this trait counts against Bent, as players like Rooney and Crouch give a lot more to the team, whereas Bent is more of an individual player. However goals win matches and if for instance, England are trailing a game 1-0 in the World Cup in the 80th minute then without a doubt Bent would be the one player you would want a chance to fall to.
Arguably some might say that Darren Bent has had his chance for England and not taken it. But five appearances is not enough to judge whether he can cut it at international level, particularly as he has only started two of those games. He also very nearly became a national hero in England’s 3-2 defeat against Croatia in the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign when a dipping volley late on went just over the bar.
Having recently won Sunderland’s player of the year it’s clear they appreciate his ability in the North-East. Whereas at Tottenham he wasn’t given the support of either his manager or the majority of the fans, despite this fact he was still Tottenham’s top scorer last season with 12 Premier League goals to his name. His infamous Twitter outburst against the club was exactly what they deserved after their awful treatment of him, particularly when Harry Redknapp claimed that his missus could have scored a chance that Bent missed. If that is the case then maybe Mrs. Redknapp should be signed for Spurs next season as none of their strikers have managed to outscore Bent for a second year running.
When Fabio Capello names his preliminary 30-man squad on Tuesday hopefully Darren Bent’s name will be amongst the list of players. He deserves to go to the tournament after this season’s efforts and he could well make a big impact in South Africa. Granted if he goes to the tournament then he will be a squad player, but so was Geoff Hurst in 1966 and he proved to be England’s hero, so maybe Darren Bent could have the same impact in 2010.
