According to The Daily Mail, Crystal Palace are looking to extend Christian Benteke and James Tomkins’ contracts at the club, with both players’ current terms set to expire soon.
What’s the word, then?
Well, the Eagles are moving to secure the futures of two first-team players at the club with their intentions to offer the pair of them new contracts.
Benteke arrived at the club in 2016 for a fee of £27m, and enjoyed an impressive debut campaign with 17 goals in all competitions – since that 2016/17 season however, he has hit just four goals.
Tomkins has become a key cog in Roy Hodgson’s side since his £10m move from West Ham in the same window, striking up an effective partnership with Mamadou Sakho at the back.
Benteke’s current deal runs out next summer and Palace are keen to tie him down to preserve his value and ensure he doesn’t leave on a free, whereas Tomkins has two years left on his contract but has also been earmarked for talks.
Palace have to lower Benteke’s salary in new contract offer
It may shock you to learn that the Belgium international currently earns a whopping £120k-a-week at Selhurst Park, making him the second highest earner at the club after the £130k-a-week Wilfried Zaha.
For a club like Palace to be paying Benteke such astronomical wages, he simply has to be returning more goals.
The former Liverpool man, as aforesaid, has only scored four times in the last two seasons, whilst he has also endured a number of niggling injury issues.
We recently detailed how the south Londoners’ care-free spending has put them in a position where they can no longer spend huge amounts in the market until the books even themselves out a bit, and getting such a huge earner who contributes very little off the wage books would be a good way to start that process.
If Palace do plan to keep the 28-year-old for a few more years, they simply cannot continue to pay him £120k-a-week for what he offers to the team.
