da leao: [ad_pod ]Danny Higginbotham has told talkSPORT that Manchester United are not as fit as Manchester City or Liverpool.
He said: “If you’re playing counter attacking football you are conserving energy constantly.
“Manchester United are not on the same fitness levels as City or Liverpool.
“If Klopp or Guardiola were to take over Manchester United tomorrow could the style be implemented straight away?”
Higginbotham was discussing the issue with Dean Saunders, who believed that the Red Devils players do not work hard enough and fitness has nothing to do with it.
Looking at the stats we can see that Manchester United rank 14th for number of sprints and 18th distance covered.
It is hard from stats to work out if they are unfit or not working hard enough but surely a club such as United have the best fitness coaches available so, fitness should not be an issue in that squad.
The claim made by Higginbotham does seem to be far fetched. Premier League players should be at the peak of their physical capacity so, to suggest they aren’t fit enough, is an insult to Jose Mourinho, his coaching staff and the dedicated fitness coaches at Old Trafford.
What certainly seems more likely is the fact that the current United players didn’t work hard enough for Mourinho and now that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is permanent manager, they aren’t working hard enough for him either.
In the 4-0 defeat to Everton a few weeks ago, the Red Devils were outrun by their opponents by around eight kilometres, and that smacks of poor work-rate rather than a lack of fitness.
This current squad needs to be totally overhauled, as the players at the moment not only aren’t good enough, but don’t work hard enough either.
This is a horrible combination that will lead to more years of mediocrity for the Red Devils unless big changes are made over the summer.
